Re: Older 0L, ready to take plunge, have questions.

I think hanging out your shingle isn't terrible but you have to be aware you won't make much starting out and possibly for years. The folks I know who did it maybe netted $60k after paying overhead and other costs. Debt minimization should be your highest priority if that is your plan. I know you're...

Re: Bay Area IP Lit Big Law Firms Decision?

IP lit isn't a bad idea if you think you may want to switch to tech transactions later. I would pick wherever has a robust practice for both (in that same office, not IP lit in one office and tech transactions in another) so you can try assignments from each during your summer.

Why no WSGR?

Re: Dropping Out and Reapplying

Now I'm confused. You blamed your school, but now you don't blame your school? And looking back at this thread, you said it was important for you to have a clerkship but then said it was far from your concerns at the moment. To be more direct on my earlier point, I suspect you are probably not good ...

Re: Dropping Out and Reapplying

I suspect the problem isn't your school or your grades, but without knowing more, I can't speculate on solutions. You should try to talk to some folks in your life who can give you an honest take on what's going wrong.

Always communicate if you're going to miss a deadline. You will annoy the assigning attorney far more if they don't have a heads up and can't plan for a delay.

Re: Jones Day gender discrimination suit

I don't know why people keep going there when they have such a shit reputation. A friend of mine (woman, minority) who went to a lower T14 picked them from all her offers when she was doing OCI and I still cannot fathom why.

Re: Name Drop

It's not unethical to say you talked to someone. I just wouldn't stretch it out to more than it is, because someone will probably ask them if they know you, and if they don't remember, that's not gonna help your application. I see nothing wrong with saying you talked to so-and-so and were interested...

Don't stress about it. The pile-on isn't so much about you personally as it is just trying to make sure that OP weighs the advice being discussed appropriately.

Re: Views on Reapplying?

I can't fathom why it's pestering or childish to show you want to work somewhere by applying again after rejection. Maybe if you send a rude email after getting rejected again? If the position is there, then anyone can submit their info. Firms know that. Recruiters know that. Eagles, you're imposing...

Re: Views on Reapplying?

Is it common for people to reapply? I just fear for OP that they may stand out negatively if it is not so common for people to reapply after getting rejected. Your query doesn't really change anything for OP. OP can reapply, and they either are interested or they're not, based on either being rejec...

I mentioned the wrong practice area in the cover letter, an area they didn't have. I mixed up my templates when I was submitting them.

I would ignore the OCI issue unless you did something dumb like me. They can figure that out on their own.

Re: Views on Reapplying?

I would think the same but one time a firm that I bid on at OCI, didn't get an interview with, but then saw at a diversity job fair and landed a callback through that interaction, pulled my info/docs from my rejected OCI application and circulated it to everyone I interviewed with. Turns out I had s...

I'm sorry you've been struggling. It's never easy to realize you're not where you want to be. Your law school would be the first place to start for some short term ideas for jobs, assuming your career services folks (or at least one of them) are worth anything. Get legal advice re disability issues and your previous jobs/needing accomodations, and definitely look at jobs that aren't biglaw/are less stressful. There seems to be a pattern forming where biglaw may not be very compatible with your bipolar disorder.

Re: Transfer offices

Is there demand/need for another junior associate in that office? I think this depends on your firm's structure and how much business is coming into that office (i.e. can they support you).

I don't think it hurts to ask unless there are clear signals from management that it would be frowned upon.

I second nony. I was nervous about my perceived deficiencies that I went into OCI in a defensive crouch, and it came through in my application materials and interviews. The end result was not getting many initial interviews, let alone callbacks. It's a miracle I ended up in biglaw. Every time you st...
