Re: LEGAL SALARY DATAPOINTS

Yeah you can scale in law somewhat.
But equity biglaw partner takes 15 years which kind of defeats the point of scaling.
It’s also not 10x scaling but more like 1.4x scaling. Pyramid scheme vs true scaing.
Shitlaw equity partner or Personal injury is def scalable, but the risk there is insane.

Re: LEGAL SALARY DATAPOINTS

Also true ^^

Getting rich stacking hourly labor dollars is such a suckers game. You have to scale somehow, be that in equity or impact decision making beyond law. In house gives you opps at those. Billable hour never will.

Re: LEGAL SALARY DATAPOINTS

Losing 13 years of your life and then probably taking another 10+ off health wise is such a shortsighted decision imo.

Tons of new studies saying sleep is basically the most important health factor. Couple of partners at my firm have died in their 60s — totally unheard of for millionaire 60 yos

Re: LEGAL SALARY DATAPOINTS

Yeah I think high end pathern equity is basically untouchable at ~$5 M guaranteed salary But problem is takes 20 years to get there. And your nonequity partner years 8-13 are probably incredibly brutal from what I’ve seen. 1-8 lockstep salary and bonus pretty fine 8-13 nonequity partner $500k ish wi...

Re: LEGAL SALARY DATAPOINTS

If you’re factoring in 1600 billables instead of 2000 and equity appreciation I think you’re coming out ahead in house looking at those numbers.

Re: Do a large amount of plaintiff’s lawyers tend to be conservative?

90% of the lawyers I encounter in a major city are Dems. It’s notable when I meet a conservative lawyer. Biglaw though and dont know many plaintiffs lawyers

Re: SCOTUS and Other Big Cases

Yeah blackmans take does seem fine enough

There was a time when Judge Kavanaugh argued that Scalia's Morrison dissent should become the majority opinion. Now, he has had two occasions to cite it in seminal separation of powers cases. But instead, he hitched a ride on the Chief's wagon.

Re: SCOTUS and Other Big Cases

Hmm my takeaway was the opposite emphasis on thin skinned rapist.

Like dude writes an opinion liberals agree with, and is still being called a rapist. Gonna be a hilarious career and infamy for him.

I see your interpretation now though. So dunno.

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Yeah just echoing all of the above. Only point that hasn’t been hit on yet that I’d add is I think you are glorifying/making law out to be something it’s not. Talk to some of the product counsel at your company and ask about their jobs day to day. I don’t really see the overlap with someone working ...

Oh yeah fold in your PI work there. I realized the work I valued most was my pro Bono projects and it made sense to explore PI after that.

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Fair enough re taking the recruiter call. If you aren’t at all curious about the “what could be”, I think your decision is made and there’s nothing wrong with that. Careers are a means to an end. Do what you want and what will make you happy. I have a lingering nag that you took the interview wonder...

Obvi lawyer perspective here but more generally if you are up for a work life challenge temporarily, those types of jobs can open lots of doors down the road

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

I guess no one has gotten to the end of IBR and PAYE to actually find out whether the forgiven amount is taxed. Anybody who commentates on this issue is essentially making a prediction about how the IRS and courts will interpret the tax code, right? I don’t know if there is a definitive “correct” a...

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

So is that guy saying that even if you just did 25 years on REPAYE that there is actually no tax bomb? If true, seems like TLS was giving people a lot of shitty advice back in the day Yes it’s only taxable to the extent you have net worth. I’ve said this for years now. No one understands the tax bo...

FYI - y'all should call you servicers to see if the extension applies to you. My income based repayment anniversary is on January 1, so I don't qualify. The date is not when your recertification is due, but the anniversary of when you officially entered income based repayment is the reference date ...
