Re: Thoughts on City Attorney's Office?

big cities have a pretty big variety of things for their CAO, smaller ones usually contract it out to a firm

but still it's mostly jailing homeless people in my limited experience

I got my first job through it, it's not that stressful unless you think interviews are stressful. DC is cool, so you can do some cool stuff there afterwards.

Re: Public Defender Gunner Guide 0L through 3L

1L You may be able to volunteer at some quasi legal service non-profit, other than volunteering as a victim’s advocate or a district attorney intern , it shouldn’t matter too much what you do as long as you serve people similar to clientele of a PD office. . . . 3L Volunteer at public interest org ...

Re: Public Defender Gunner Guide 0L through 3L

oh yeah but going by your definition of how much you make at 45 years old if you start at 26 or something like that... If you are still a PD by that point you are either a bad ass mother fucker, in management, or just a waste of space waiting to retire. Frankly, all three of those people would proba...

Re: Public Defender Gunner Guide 0L through 3L

This is going to vary WIDELY by jurisdiction. Two examples: Colorado State Public Defender - Colorado's economic is booming so there are lots of private sector openings, while I was there it was very rare to stay past 5 years. I'd say most dont make it to 5, and about half of those make it 10, and a...

1) absolutely, because it shows commitment to the client base through the work. It also shows you understand the broad themes of the business (the stress, triumphs, and tragedies, and show that you could be a "good fit" in a PD office. PD's are generally weirdos, and having any PD ties will help the...

Public Defender Gunner Guide 0L through 3L

This guide is meant to maximize your odds working as a public defender out of law school. It is not meant for people who want to have a fall back option because a lot of the advice here will make you less competitive for other career paths. But, if being a PD is your main goal it may be wise to 100%...

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

fun fact: If you are applying for an FHA backed loan, HUD requires lenders to assume that you are making 1% payments every month, so if you owe 100k the lender has to pretend you are paying 1k in student loans every month even if you are in IBR and paying $50/month.

Re: Criminal Defense

Our county needs people on the juvenile felony list but I feel like 7 months experience and no juvenile training would make it a bad idea. I actually enjoy juvenile delinquency cases more than the typical misdemeanor/felony. They're tough to come by though I signed up so I'll let you know how it go...

No advice on your paths, but for MJ stuff, maybe bug these bros? https://www.canbar.org/ If you're a member of the Colorado Bar Assn, the next Cannabis Law Committee Meeting looks to be Thursday August 2 at lunch. Hmmm I'll look into whether I can attend that sort of thing while I still have my cur...

I don't have any thoughts, advice or insults. But I did find your post, and your current job, pretty interesting. Can you give us some more info on what all your day-to-day entails as a hearing officer and what the driver's license suspension hearings are like? I had a Q&A in this thread if you are...

Hey so I'm looking for some career trajectory advice as I'm coming up to a crossroad I was a public defender for about 4.5 years, lots of trials, stress, etc. I've been a hearing officer at a state agency, my current role is mostly to preside of driver's license suspension hearings. I've been doing ...

Re: Small town prosecutor: AMA

That kid would probably get acquitted in most jurisdictions without a per se or presumptive THC limit, if he has a decent lawyer anyway.

Random Q: how much of Trumperism do you think is due to rural getting boned by driver's license suspensions?

Re: Small town prosecutor: AMA

Oh cool, so this is random but can you cite the hardship permit law in Oregon? One day I'd like to convince our legislature to allow some sort of hardship permit, there are a lot of people here that are fucked pretty bad by their DMV issues.

The commonwealth of Northern Marianas PDO (Saipan) is hiring. One of my friends finished a 2yr stint there and his replacement backed out so they are sort of desperate.
