Re: Change of Career Post BL

Hey would any of your opinions change if one was gunning for legal academia? Would that take away from the insular nature of a humanities PhD (either philosophy or political theory), or make the job market hunt less depressing? I would argue that the legal academia job market is much MORE depressin...

Re: LEGAL SALARY DATAPOINTS

Updated with Nebby's info. I need to add some info from our sister site, and I'll try to do that in the next few weeks. Generally, I count every experience between 0 and 1 years of experience as 1 and 1-2 as 2, etc. Given the non-quantitative inputs frequently offered on our sister site, it has hist...

Re: Employment Statistics by School - C/O 2018 rolling out + C/O 2012-2017 data

Also, Northwestern just released their JD-MBA numbers separately, and it's by far the largest percentage of BL folks in that crowd in at least 8 years (21/27 in 100+ firms). So, for the first time in a long time (maybe ever), NU's BL+FC percentage actually dropped when you remove the JD-MBA's from ...

Just checking in to say Iowa (the state) is awesome and ending up in Iowa or staying in Iowa would be great from a quality of life perspective.
Grew up in Iowa and visit fairly frequently, and I can't endorse this statement more.

Re: CLS vs GULC for international law

Why are these the two options? You have to have more on the table than the Columbia at sticker (?) and GULC at a decent discount. I'm not a fan of this amount of debt for either of these schools. What's your GPA/LSAT?

Re: Northwestern 1L/2L/3L/Grads Taking Questions

This is relevant to my interests. I’m looking for a place with good access to both campuses. I’ve been looking for housing near purple stops, but would you say this is a better option for that? If you're looking for a place with good access to both campuses, then Rogers Park is probably going to be...

Re: Iowa v. Wisconsin

If one of your options is Iowa at sticker, that means you have a lot of room for improvement on your LSAT. 27% of students receive full-tuition or more and another 27% receive full to half tuition. Iowa is one of the most generous schools when it comes to financial aid. If you want to end up in Iowa...

Re: Biglaw 2L SA to PI

Thanks for the good advice. I've already started eyeing PI internships for both semesters, so I'm in a good place there. Do you suggest any resources to really assess the scope of PI opportunities out there? I've found a few buckets (e.g. legal aid, PD/DA, AG, Federal), but I'm not sure all what rea...

Biglaw 2L SA to PI

How hard would it be to jump from a Biglaw 2L SA to PI? I'm about to start my SA in a month but pretty much regret going the biglaw route, as it just doesn't jive well with me on a fulfillment front. My T14 has fellowships, but I worry that I won't be competitive because my PI resume is just BAD w/o...

So I just got back from NU’s ASW and I don’t feel like I cleared things up much. The mock class was amazing and I REALLY liked Chicago (so good news there!) but the social components of NU seemed...really lacking. In short, I’ve been to other ASWs and read about other ones and the current students ...

Re: NU ~$$$$ vs UVA ~$$$

I'm leaning Northwestern here, but not by tons. It'll depend quite a bit on what's best for you and your husband and whether you'd be happy with biglaw in Chicago since that and NYC are the most likely outcomes for biglaw locations But doesn’t UVA mostly place in NY and DC too tho? I’m possibly ver...

PI interest as well with an ultimate goal of a political career. I care deeply about choosing the place where I'll be the happiest and the most intellectually stimulated so I'm hesitant to let money play a role even though I'd be taking on the full price tag in debt. Then choose the Ruby. HYS and C...

I mean there's always a chance. But if the needle doesn't actually move you off those waitlists, you shouldn't panic and you should feel comfortable applying next cycle. I want to second this piece of advice. A 3.4/169 can mean very big money at some of the lower T14 for a URM. I'd 100% sit out ano...

Tech in the Practice

I was wondering if anyone had found any useful tech for practice, whether that be hardware or software. I'll be an SA this summer and full-time associate next year, so I'm pretty curious. For example, would an ipad + stylus be useful for marking up documents? Intuitively, to me, it sounds like it wo...

Picking a Practice Group for 2L Summer

I'm picking practice group preferences for my 2L SA, and I'm really struggling. I've got a clear #1 but beyond that a good few sound pretty fun/interesting. Currently, I've got Real Estate Finance, Tax, Capital Markets, Financial Regulation, and M&A as the real contenders for slot #2, but it's reall...

Are you doing substantively different work when you're on deals or are you just doing exec comp/plan work on a deal timeline? Yes. Generally, my work was in plan drafting (SPDs, LTIP, 401(K) plan documents, etc.) and compliance (and occasionally ERISA based litigation). However, when I did deal wor...

Former ERISA (exec compensation, qualified and unqualified plan work). In-House now; did deal work in between. I would love to hear more about what deal work amounts to in an EBEC practice. I took an EBEC class at my school, loved it, and got the best grade in the class. In the next couple weeks, I...

Columbia's looks to be worth the most, albeit with some bureaucracy. (https://www.law.columbia.edu/sites/default/files/microsites/social-justice/files/2019_gsf_program_guide.pdf) If I'm reading that PDF correctly, Columbia looks like it gives $4,500 1L and $6,000 2L. That is not the most. Northwest...

What the heck is "emerging growth"?

I'm exploring my firms practice areas as I think about asking to split for the summer (we aren't asked about it until February, luckily), and I found a practice area called "emerging growth" but have no clue what it's about. It looks like it centers around Rule 701, which I've touched on a bit in my...

The data for 2016, 2017, and 2018 should be there. For instance, Willkie's grid shows they hired 50 in 2017, 45 in 2016, and expect to hire 34 in 2018.
