Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

My brother is thinking of applying. We were both raised Muslim but are pretty much atheist. How weirded out will he be if he attends? Like how Catholic is the school and instructions in practice? The Catholic identity is up front. Every classroom has a crucifix and several profs start classes with ...

Re: Feeder Judge Rankings

Do these numbers account for feeders to Justices Scalia and Kennedy? Since they were on the Court for most of the period, I think it would be helpful to have them in the table.

Re: Notre Dame v. UC Davis

Six figure debt for UC Davis seems like too much. And almost 200k for NDLS is too much for sure. I would retake/reapply.

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

People choosing law schools focus on the weirdest things. The town where you go to law school is meaningless compared to: 1 firms coming to OCI, 2 juiced in faculty who can make calls for clerkships, 3 name recognition, and 4 LRAP. ND is ideal for people trying to get into Midwest biglaw offices, c...

Re: Notre Dame vs Vandy

Have your thought about where “elsewhere” could mean? And are there any reputable law schools there where you could go for free or close to it? That would likely be a better answer than going to either South Bend or Nashville hoping to land state or local ada in places other than the areas near sou...

Re: Notre Dame vs Vandy

Given where your ties are and your career desires (not biglaw), I would go with Notre Dame here if you're not willing to retake.

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Why did you choose ND? Was it the right choice? What did the school lack per your experience, and what did it offer that made it unique? I chose Notre Dame because I had several quite similar offers from peer schools, but Notre Dame was my home. I was here for undergrad and I didn't want to leave. ...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

According to the website, it says that FOG, Cripe Street, and U Village are closing for grad student housing. Are there any plans to open new facilities? Where do people plan to live? Also, taking all opinions: ND at almost sticker, or a solid T2 regional school with full tuition scholarship? Goal ...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Do most 1L's live alone or with roommates? I'm from the LA area where rent is prohibitively expensive, and most people have roommates. South Bend is so much cheaper in comparison, so currently trying to weigh those options! I think it varies. I lived by myself in a cheap studio (that I just kept fr...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Do students in the top 25%-30% have a real chance at national biglaw? (a/k/a Skadden, Cravath, Jones) Jones Day, yes (particularly if you are from an area that has a satellite office, e.g. we sent a ton of people to the Ohio offices). Skadden Chicago, maybe. Cravath, very unlikely. Appreciate the c...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Does Notre Dame law school offer an optional health insurance plan to their students? My parents live in another country and I am not married yet. I currently have health insurance but I will not by the time I start law school. I am not really happy about the perspective of paying $700/mo. for heal...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

2013 grad, two-time clerk, long time TLS poster. Hello! I received my acceptance and I'm thrilled. Notre Dame has always been a dream. My only hesitation is internship/career opportunities. I see a lot of advice to the tune of "study where you want to work". I'm moving to law school with a signific...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

This is purely out of curiosity: My sister attended ND as an undergraduate and the Roman Catholic affiliation was very obvious, and many students were Catholic. Is the same true at the law school? Well yes, Notre Dame is a Catholic school that doesn't hide its Catholic identity. A clear majority of...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Hello. Does the COA really cover the cost of living around South Bend? Tuition takes up almost all of the COA, and that doesn't leave much left for rent, insurance, gas, not dying of starvation... I'm a single parent, willing to live in a studio with my child (glamorous lifestyle alert!); I don't k...

Re: Notre Dame C/O 2021

Booked my plane tickets for ASW in March. South Bend is sort of difficult and expensive to get to. Even with connection flights--which is pretty much the only thing I could get--I wasn't able to keep my ticket under $400. Definitely a drawback. Does anyone else know an easier/cheaper way to get to ...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

This question came up in a discussion among my fellow 0Ls. Is there a way to tell if a school's clerkship placement success is primarily linked to judges of a certain ideological persuasion? Anecdotal (based on experience clerking on the Seventh Circuit and talking with clerks elsewhere) - I would ...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Typical outcome for a student at median? Some go to regional firms back where they're from (in many markets, median at ND seems fairly impressive). Others end up at DA/PD offices. A tiny few at legitimate biglaw (a lot of things would have to go right for them). When I was there, a good number of p...

Re: Notre Dame alum taking questions

Where do Notre Dame grads usually end up post law school? Indiana? Chicago? NY? Edit: Also what is South Bend like? I've never been there and have only heard horror stories from my father who despises ND  1. Most people usually end up going back where they're from. Those who don't (and have th...

Re: Clarification on JSP scale

Interesting, my chambers had a career clerk on JSP14 while I was on JSP13. It's now my 3rd year clerking (2nd for current judge) and the career clerk retired, yet I only moved to JSP13-2. I was told that JSP14 was for career clerks only...but didn't think this was accurate. If the judge is consider...

I am working on an overall guide, which I will try to post very soon (and which other smarter clerks will be invited to fact check).
Looking forward to this. Let me know if I can contribute in any way.
